Remembering back to when I was a teenager, having airguns was virtually a birthright. As long as you weren't breaking windows or shooting cats*, nobody worried about it - after all, they were "not real guns," the general view that Society had of them.
Airguns, however, did start my love of shooting which has continued through to the present day and I wonder if The Powers That Be are taking a long view on this and are trying to prevent the would-be young shooters of today getting the bug in the first place? I can't imagine that all these extra checks have been dreamed up by Police Scotland - more time, effort and hassle for a problem that, most likely, doesn't exist - so it must be driven by Holyrood.
Previously ingrained behaviours and conventions take time to change at a Societal level. Drink Driving and eating fried bread were practically mandatory back in the 1970's but the Public's attitude towards them did shift over the years and now both activities are unthinkable. Any sort of shooting could go the same way in a couple of decades or less if kids are denied that special moment where they shoot their first airgun, go "Hell, yeah!! and are set on the path.
*Funny how you never hear of anyone shooting dogs...

I had the same questions to complete as well as the AWL1 form.
I know they contacted my co-signer for a check on my character.
Mine also to Buckie firearms team.
He has actually called me here in Kuwait where i am working for a 15 min chat about gun safety etc and a few follow up questions about the form.
I was asked to supply pics of my storage and then asked how many rifles and pistol i owned.
The rifles i can understand, but i thought that pistols were not covered under the air weapons licensing requirements.
Regards,
John

Update on my renewal.
I was asked if i do any shooting in my garden.
Was then asked to give measurements and supply pictures of where i shoot.
This was accepted as reason for owning air weapon.
Remember to put this on your application if you have the room to shoot.
Renewal now granted

Update on my renewal. I was asked if i do any shooting in my garden. Was then asked to give measurements and supply pictures of where i shoot. This was accepted as reason for owning air weapon. Remember to put this on your application if you have the room to shoot. Renewal now granted JR It's the same now for an initial grant as well. Photos of the garden, especially the boundaries and what they're made of, plus the intended internal storage area. The subsequent telephone interview with the Firearms Officer was quite extensive, covering the salient points of the legislation, basic gun handling and control and safe shooting practices. The whole process took about three months start to finish, from my initial application to receiving the Certificate. Your point about stating your reasons for shooting is very important. When applying for my initial Certificate, I was told that any intended activity had to be specifically noted on the Certificate (pest control, target practice, etc.) in order to be allowed to carry it out and comply with the legislation. After a lot of trials and tribulations my AWC has come thru, six months to process in total. All legal for the next 5 years. I'll think I will start to prepare for my next submission next week, just in case .

I have just started sent all forms and photos via snail mail today but not the fee as could not find any where that explained where to pay. The links to the police seem to be broken so must have changed so just hoping when they start the paperwork they will let me know how to pay then. Also do I need to buy a gun cabinet?

As someone who's recently gone through the process, I had to provide a photograph to my allocated Firearms Officer of my cabinet and its location. I understand others have got away with a wall-mounted trigger guard in a lockable cupboard. Different FOs ask for different things but they all seem to look for a lockable element. I'd advise clarifying with your FO before you incur any expense.
Regarding payment, I was instructed to pay online. The details were: Scottish Police Authority, 83-06-08, 20897522 with "AWL1" and your name as a reference. Those were the details six months ago. Again, best clarify with your FO perhaps.
Good luck!

Got this reply a month ago not a word since I do love the way they basically confirm this is gonna take some time with the "popped it in the pile":
Hi Ian
Just to confirm payment for your AWL and I’ve popped your new grant into the pile for progression – thank you.
Maria
Been window shopping oh there are some pretty nice weapons out there, may be going down to the show at Birmingham in Feb to see what is down there.
