Good morning all, hi from snotty/coughing/sore throat -Stonehaven (thanks Covid)... Can I ask is anyone being asked to take extra steps during their airgun licensing (AWC) renewal applications? I ask as I just saw this on a FB Airgun group, from a Forfar-based airgunner... ...so could any of you folks let me know if you have recent license-renewal experiences that seemed unusual? Cheers me dears. Russ

I recently countersigned a mate's renewal and got a call from the Police a couple of days later.
The nice chap was just after a verbal confirmation of said mate's character and there was no great formality.
Never had such a call first time round though.

I guess you should have been contacted really, for the sake of a phone call.
Cheers. Russ

Update: I believe during license renewal there's now a space to complete the number of air rifles and pistols owned, but that's all.
So no requirements to provide photos or further details, providing we give assurance they're stored safely / where they can't be accessed by non license holders, of course.
Cheers. Russ

Our Safety Officer and I have certainly been getting more calls from Police Scotland / FAOs than in previous years. They want to know a) is the applicant a member, b) how active have they been in shooting at the Club, and in some cases c) “what are they like”.
We have also noted an increase in new member applications, due to the Police suggesting new AWL applicants should belong to a club.

I'm also renewing my licence at the minute, I didn't get asked to layout my guns like that, but they did ask for a photo of how I store the rifle and who has access to my home.
Also I had what can only be described as a phone interview, where he asked me about the club, gun safety etc.
Although reading everyone else's experiences, it sounds like there may be some inconsistency about how they police are managing licence renewals.

It's definitely inconsistent. My next renewal isn't due until next year, but even the one I've already done was more in depth than my initial application. I had to get a doctor's letter (pay through the teeth for it, naturally) and speak with an officer on the phone as a sort of very mild interview. Neither of which I had to do to get the licence in the first place, and I know others from speaking at the club who didn't do either at first renewal.
If it helps stop scrotes getting air "weapons" then fair enough, but call me cynical, I don't think Wee Ned Jimmy is going to apply for a licence for the old .22 he bought from Big Davey at the pub.

First ever AWL1 submission and i got following response: ---------------------------------------------------------------
OFFICIAL Mr ,
I have been allocated the enquiry for your Air Weapon Certificate. I will be in contact in due course, but in the meantime please provide the following information to speed up the overall process;
1. Full name and date of birth of any person who has unrestricted access to your home, or where you intend keeping any gun obtained by yourself. 2. A form of identification of yourself, ie Driver’s Licence or Passport 3. Photographs of your intended gun security if it is already in place. 4. I note that you submitted your AWL1 application form electronically, but have only typed in the signatures of both Chris Ward and yourself, unfortunately these need to be wet hand written signatures. Please have each of you sign the form then resubmit to myself soonest. In the event that you no longer have the original Word document, I may be able to provide it.
The above can be sent by email to myself.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, should you require further information.
Regards
Firearms Enquiry Officer Buckie Police Office

That is so much more scrutiny than when the AWL first came out. It strikes me that the whole business is being decentralised and farmed out to local officers rather than being handled directly from French St. police station in Glasgow.
Of course, it might've gone easier for you if someone more respectable countersigned your application...😁

abhisheks, that's exactly what I got asked to provide. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a phone call as well, about things like gun safety and the club. @brim, that's exactly what I think. My application went through Buckie Firearms team. Although fortunately, I just got my renewal though last week! So that's me for another 5 years!
