I'm thinking of getting one for Xmas: - less than £500 - 30MPa / 300Bar / 4400Psi
- dry air
I have no idea where to start looking, could someone point me in the right direction?

Paul Bates has one, as does Mike Simmonds... there are probably more. Paul is quite positive about them, whereas I've avoided them due to concerns about the dryness of air they deliver.
You are aware the Club has a Daystate compressor - speak to Chris Ward.

Start off with Yong Heng Compressor Owners Group on Facebook. There are clones, which as far as I can tell are all made in the same factory, available on EBay if you know what to look for. Need a GOOD 240 volt supply and not off an extension lead. Had mine for nearly two years with no issues, must be kept below 40 deg C as the seals in the high pressure stage are plastic, comes with own cooling system, just add bucket of cold water.
