I'd done this once before, but not compared .177 to .22 or round-nose to wadcutter. Getting gelatine from the supermarket is an expensive way of buying it in the quantities I need for this experiment. So, onto e**y and A****n. The latter came through with some affordable pork gelatine powder. After a session of mixing, waiting, heating, waiting and refrigerating I had a block of "poor man's" ballistic gel. The only problem with this material as ballistics gel is a) it has that aroma of pig (not the nice bacon version!) and b) it second only to a petri dish for growing mould. To the Bat Cave - well, the shooting tunnel actually, but that doesn't sound as dramatic. I'd established the .177 8.4gr JSB Exact (from the MK4is) had the same fpe as the .22 15.9gr RWS Superfield (from the Ultra) at the 26yds I was shooting. This then is measure (indication) of the rate of energy loss between the two calibres. I also shot a .177 7gr RWS R10 wadcutter from my 6.6fpe (muzzle) HW30S - I mention that just to explain the third pellet in the gel. .177 centre and .22 right. Didn't think penetration would be this similar. I suppose it is a fight of momentum vs. resistance (larger head size = large area = larger resistance). The penetration cavity diameter is not a lot different either. The wadcutter (which will have less than half of the fpe at 26 yds) goes a surprisingly long way in and a larger penetration cavity diameter.

CSI featured a lot of ballistic gel. And the theme song was "Who Are you?"
Significant?

Yuerch, don’t keep the gel too long, it gets very furry and smells bad.
