Put a Nikko Stirling Panamax in a (new) set of Sportsmatch mounts on the Ultra. First shot (at 25m) was about 6” high and 9” right. Hmmm. So set the scope to mechanical centre and it was 3” high and 11” right. Swapped the mounts round (so the clamping screws were on the other side), no change. Scratching head time and visions of having bought a 2ndhand gun with barrel problems.
i was going to change the mounts, but instead I took the Nikko off and put my SWFA in BKL mounts on it (had to open up the BKLs due to the BSA rail) - about 2” high and 1” right.
Anyone any ideas why the problem with the Nikko/Sportsmatch?

I had that problem after I'd dropped a gun and it landed on the scope. Have you tried swapping the mounts front to back?
Is there an arrestor grub screw in the mount? Is it screwed out far enough?

Thanks I. Yes, I switched side to side and back to front at the same time. I've ordered a set of 1" BKLs to see if that sorts the problem (the scope was ok on the HW30 I took it off of - but with different mounts).

The plot thickens. All shots at 26yds: - Mechanically centred the scope and mounted in BKLs
- Shoots high and right
- Use up most of windage to get zero'd
- Mechanically centre scope again and move (still in the BKLs) to the MK4is
- Shoots high (100mm) and right (90mm)
- No adjustment, second shot low (8mm) and right (8mm). Hmmm...
- No adjustment, third shoot high (20mm) and right (120mm)
- Checked mounts are secure - yes. Something not right with the scope
- No adjustment fourth shot high (10mm) and right (170mm). Let's see if it settles
- No adjustment fifth shot low (150mm) and (right 190mm). Getting to think the erector tube is not secure.
- More shots continuing to drop, but windage has settled
- Then five shots in same place, low (230mm) and right (150mm)
Decided the scope is problem - any one disagree?
I haven't dropped/knocked the scope (and no one else indoors has touched it). Only thing I can think of is I damaged it by gently taking it to the limit of adjustment to count the clicks to establish mechanical centre.
Your thoughts or observations please.

The first site I found with a Panamax has someone complaining in the reviews that it won't hold a zero.
If it wasn't an Ultra you were using I'd suggest that recoil was upsetting the zero - my old Cometa used to occasionally kick my Nikko Stirling Air King out of zero (a sight designed to absorb a spinger's recoil no less!)

I agree..... adjustment not working as they should do (slipping), did you try another scope to confirm?

Attachment Deleted Bob is sympatric with you............. Yep, I had the same with a new Nikko Stirling mil dot, didn't use it for about a year (maybe more) after buying it, first time out it did the same as you, did many of the testing you did....but to no avail, was annoyed as by then couldn't replace it with the shop Warranty out of date. Rabbits foot may be lucky to some, but not mine in this case and I have two.....size X-Large.

Thought about having the Panamax repaired. So I searched the credit card statements and found out who I bought it from. Contacted them and they offered to replace it, only they didn’t have any in stock. So, adding £30 to the swap and I’m getting a 3-9x40 Airmax. Result.

Well, the Airmax arrived. Mounted it on the Ultra with BKL scope rings - POI about 1” to the right and 4” low at 26yds. Did the concertina’d aluminium foil trick to raise the back of the scope and POI was 1” right and a tad high - comfortably within the range to achieve zero with the elevation and windage adjustments of the scope.
Shame about the Panamax, I really like the reticle.
