One of the things we did as part of the 'fun comps' at Denwood was Shooting at Metal Holes . I enjoy Benchrest (BR) and enter into the UKBR22 postal competitions. The cardboard targets work out pretty expensive. To avoid having to walk down range each time to get the scores I'm developing the Steel Plate of Holes we had before. It will feature some electronics to sense vibration and light up some LEDs when it does. As the idea is to shoot through the holes cleanly, you don't want to see the LEDs mocking you. If you are interested, express so here on the forum. In the meantime I'm building a prototype for my own use. |

Along with getting too old, I’m also getting to believe for most of us nothing really changes significantly and wonder at the enthusiasm for the new year. Hmm, revealing insight of my state of mind. The attendance numbers suggest there is very limited interest in shooting, let along competition or challenge!! I’ll still keep trying to do things, because I enjoy doing so. If there is general apathy, then salty words deleted to prevent offending prevailing woke/PC snowflakes. It’ll probably be February (if the prototype works, or can be developed into a reliable target). I’ll put some pictures up as I progress. |

Just don't expect great things, particularly from me - I might have to spot the club a can or two of paint once I'm done with it! Still, won't know exactly how bad a shot I am until I test myself on something like this. No woke snowflakes here! |

I get very confused (well, I doesn’t, but I do… oh here we go again).
Hopefully in Feb. With early retirement comes a whole different view of timescale, urgency and priorities - some of the working population can get a little exasperated with that.
Benchrest is ‘oh so easy’. After all, you only need the pellet hole to touch the 2mm diameter ring to score ‘10’… and do that twenty five times in a row! Even if you did achieve that, it’s unlikely you’d have the highest score, because there is an ‘X’ score, a kind of tie breaker. To score an ‘X’, the pellet hole has to remove the 2mm ring entirely. The Steel Plate of Holes has twenty five holes that simulates scoring a ‘10’.
There have been a few developments in the original electronics idea, but I’ve got them working. Next challenge is marry them to the Steel Plate of Holes successfully.

My finger’s still in…. No, no, don’t. Been refurbishing my own knockdown targets and resetting my own GASS course. Also been practicing for the postal benchrest competition organised by UKBR22. And the ongoing and not insignificant tree felling necessitated by storm Otto.
So it’ll be into March before I get the target done (started painting yesterday) and saved up enough pennies (well, pounds nowadays) to get into Denwood.

Update:
Electronics proving beyond my capability - well not the electronics, more the sensing of a hit or miss. First I tried sensing sound and then vibration of impact. Haven't given up, just lost a bit of drive because of difficulties and failures of the attempts so far.
There is a 'plate of holes' at Denwood, for people to try.

It does sound like a bit of a b^gger.
Differentiating between a "plate" and a "kill" (sorry, I don't know BR terminology) either by vibration or sound is clearly a complicated business - getting the threshold just so must be a tad fiddly.

Yes a bit of a b^gger; indeed a frustrating b^gger. Not really BR terminology - do you recall, when we were 'shooting holes', to score a point, the pellet has pass through the hole without touching the plate. I need to detect it passing through the hole, and if it hit the plate. I'm considering sensing noise or vibration on the plate and light beams for the pellet passing through the hole. |

Are we talking about just a single plate of hole/holes with no secondary plate or paper behind it?

When we tried this before it was very disruptive to the range, due to the paper having to be replaced and the plate painted for each shooter. My design objective was not to have to go to the target once it has been put out. For this I’ve been thinking along the lines of a sensor on the faceplate to detect a hit on it (but I’m not yet sure of sensitivity to detect the smallest impact as efficiently as a small paint chip) and a single plate or multiple paddles behind the faceplate to record a pellet going through a hole. The electronics will process the detected impacts and use an led array to signal if the faceplate is missed, the faceplate is hit, or if the pellet has passed through a faceplate hole. I’d welcome any suggestions of alternative reliable detection methods that are easy to understand and people won’t argue about - it does not have to be electronic. |

In the distant past, during The Time of Banana Bread and Gin (AKA Lockdown/Furlough,) I lashed up a little device for 10m practice. A light detection circuit, the idea was that once mounted suitably and with a laser taped to my Izzy, the normally lit yellow LED on the black box would extinguish when the laser beam hit the Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) meaning that my aim was spot on.   Not an especially clever or elegant thing, it was just to try the principal of a cheap and cheerful doodah to help with training muscle memory.  Worked well enough but I find dry fire practice to be too boring for words so never took it any further. I mention this as a possible new direction for pellet detection. Obviously a little bit of tweaking would be required to make it a break beam system - a permanently on laser/lasers mounted behind the steel plate of holes fixed pointing at an LDR or whatever detector? It'd need some extra circuitry to display a "hit" longer than the duration of a pellet passing through and also be tied in to a vibration sensing circuit to take "plates" and "split" pellets into account. Such things should not be insurmountable if you've got the time and inclination. I'm stumped as to registering complete and utter misses of the plate of holes though. Is it really something that needs to be done bearing in mind that if you miss that you really shouldn't be doing BR? |
