No, you don't shoot sticks at the targets, the sticks are used to help stabilise the rifle when shooting standing up.
Historically there were five shooting positions allowed in HFT; in order of stability:
1. Prone - especially as the butt can be on the ground and the fore-end either rested on a closed fist or supported using the shooting peg,
2. Kneeling supported,
3. Standing supported,
4. Kneeling unsupported, and
5. Standing unsupported.
About 1-2 years ago, UKAHFT recognised that some shooters cannot shoot from the prone position. Thus, a sixth position - 'Sticks', was created. Meaning, instead of being excluded, they can still enjoy competing in HFT.
In terms of stability, there is a very obvious parallel to the 'Standing supported' position. Arguably this means, when using sticks, stability is compromised on the 26 targets that can be shot from a prone or kneeling supported position!
The rules state "Competitors shoot ALL targets utilising shooting sticks. This includes all positional and prone only shots. Targets will be shot from the standing position using shooting sticks. No other position may be adopted eg. Kneeling or sitting.". Shooting the 2 positional targets designated as 'unsupported' arguably gives an advantage to the stick user. I suppose it might. in a small way, offset the compromised stability experienced during the 26 targets shot from a prone or kneeling supported position.
The reason for this post - if you can't shoot prone, or don't want to scrabble around in the mud, you can still enjoy HFT. Anyhow, don't let the UKAHFT rules stop you, just come along and enjoy shooting the targets in the glorious woodland setting of Waulkmill.
