Hi folks,
Am rather tempted to join the "going postal" group and have started clearing space in the loft in anticipation, but am sans pistol at the moment (bit of a showstopper).
Was thinking of trying to get a secondhand one of these: FAS6004 or HW75 or IZH-46M (right handed). I've seen that folks have had all three at the club (the last being the recent "Schrödinger" embellished with classic stickers, right?) so would be keen to hear any opinions on whether anyone would particularly recommend or advise against one or the other.
Should anyone have one lurking spare that they'd be willing to let me try out for a few days, I'd be particularly grateful.
Thanks!

Of the three you list, I only have the HW75, which I am using, sorry.
The FAS and HW75 are quite expensive (I got my HW75 secondhand) and the IZZY is rare. You might think about the Gamo Compact (which SteveP used to win last years pistol comp).
Oh! and Schrodinger’s isn’t an IZZY.

Quite happy with the HW75?
Looking into these, you're right about how rare the IZH-46M in particular seems to be, although I've seen the newer Baikal MP-46M for sale more readily. I'll also take a look at the Gamo Compact you recommended as there seem to be plenty for sale and they are indeed much more affordable than the others.
With a little more research I've also expanded my "perhaps one day" list to include the Pardini K58 (or maybe even its shorter older brother the Pardini P10), both as difficult as the Baikal to find - if not harder. Also coveted is the Feinwerkbau LP 103 (described by some as the king of the SSP field) but 3-4x the price of others and 6-7x the cost of the Gamo... definitely for better times. Nonetheless, I'd be interested if anyone has had firsthand experience with the Pardini or the FWB 103 to give their view?
Just back on the FAS, I've read that both the 6004 and 604 are described as a bit underpowered relative to the datasheet. For those of you that have actually shot the FAS - is this a noticeable issue?

Nick shoots his HW75 far better than I shoot mine. FWIW, I rank my pistols 1st Gamo Compact, 2nd HW45, =3rd Beeman P17 and HW75, if I remember correctly Russ was heard to comment about the below than expected muzzle energy of the FAS he had.

Thanks for that.
Just on the prospects of just getting hold of an air pistol, am I right in understanding that: (a) licensed merchants cannot send by post as they need to verify my age and AWC before handing it over, (b) shops are all shut due to Covid, and (c) remote private sale difficult as none of the shipping companies will carry an air weapon?
So basically, I either find a private sale locally and arrange the transaction at a 2m distance, or it's not going to happen?
Limits things a bit doesn't it - or am I missing something?

Sorry to contradict Bri. Having reread Bri’s post, I now agree with him, sorry Bri. stef242 “(a)” you are correct, “(b)” yep most likely, but “(c)” you are mistaken. I don’t want to get into retyping details from the Royal Mail and Parcelforce websites, but some (the type we are talking about here) private sales can be sent by by post. As well as Bri’s option (d), there are websites such as AirgunBBS.com and shooting-the-breeze.com who have a 2ndhand sales section (you’ll need to have posted a qualifying number of times to see the sales section). Good luck.

Thanks folks,
I took the plunge and bid for a second-hand Walther LPM-1 on the German eGun site, and won it last Sunday. Thank goodness for Google Translate!
The seller has posted it and I've been tracking it on DHL (on the international Germany-UK leg just now) so waiting with baited breath to see if I got stuffed or picked up a good one. I was hopeful it would arrive by the weekend but given it's not yet in the UK, that was probably optimistic. I'll probably be on asking for tips on how to fix this or that once it arrives, and probably for someone to chrono it for me to be sure it's kosher.
We're extremely grateful to Russ who very kindly loaned us his Izzy, and last weekend we built a solid pellet catcher in the loft using plywood we had spare. This week my wife was also able to buy a bit of 3mm steel plate from a blacksmith so the whole set-up is working really well. Key issue is to get some scores that are worth posting to the Postal competition, but we're getting close.

Nice choice Stef - the LPM-1 is a lovely piece of kit. It's easy to stereotype the engineering standards of countries but the German Walther really does make the Russian Izzy look a little agricultural.
Hope it arrives soon and be sure to post some pics when it does.

Well Stef, I'd have to say you made a great choice - but then I would say that, wouldn't I? The Walther LPM-1 is the SSP pistol that Carl Walther designed when he got sick of Feinwerkbau copying his ideas. As Bri has already said - the engineering of these pistols is superb. If you've got a good one, you'll be delighted. If you've bought a lemon, it'll be easily sorted. Now - you still have to name it...

This is a worry -
Stef's best effort so far.
One handed, ten shots and nothing less than a nine with Russ's Izzy. He said that he didn't want to post any cards until he could get a bit more respectable but I think we need to know that there's a new hotshot in town.

Oh-oh! I dunno about a "new" hotshot though - maybe just an *actual* hotshot! Good shooting Stef!

Bravo Stef, lets see some 'non-postal' online postal targets from you
And you to SteveP, lets see how the Borg assimilates the symbiosis with the grips. Damn, not sure if all those words should live together in one sentence!

Bravo Stef, lets see some 'non-postal' online postal targets from you And you to SteveP, lets see how the Borg assimilates the symbiosis with the grips. Damn, not sure if all those words should live together in one sentence! Challenge accepted! Seeing Stef's hideously good card made me start to doubt my own credentials, so I immediately Borged up, set up a target holder - and shot a mighty 33! After having a word with myself under the plumb tree in the corner of the garden, I got back to business and shot these: Those are 14cm targets, shot from 10 metres, outdoors. That's with virtually no practice over the last couple of months, so there's *hopefully room for improvement. I just know I'm going to regret posting these... * definitely room for deterioration.

I've shot even less and done much worse so I wouldn't feel too bad about that.
